ACSC's Stay Smart Online has teamed up with the Australian Taxation Office to bring you tips and resources to help you stay safe online at tax time.

Every year at tax time the number of scams targeting Australians skyrockets.

Tax scams change from year to year. Cybercriminals claim to be from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) or registered tax agents, or associated with trusted brands like myGov, and use convincing language to trick taxpayers as they prepare to lodge their tax returns or await tax refunds.

Follow the tips and resources below to help you stay safe online at tax time.

Cyber safety at tax time resources

Share these resources with your staff, customers and stakeholders to highlight the importance of safe cyber practices at a time of heightened cyber security risk and an increased volume of consumers interacting online this tax time.

Where to get help

Falling victim to an online scam, a virus or other internet nasty can be frustrating and unpleasant but help is always available!

  • If you are ever unsure whether an ATO interaction is genuine, don’t reply. Call the ATO or call on 1800 008 540 or to verify.
  • To reinforce the security of your information and to help protect your personal records, you can also enrol your voice-print with the ATO next time you phone them, or through the ATO app.
