The Have I been pwned? site offers a simple method for users to check if they have an account that has been compromised in a data breach.

Developed by Troy Hunt, a Microsoft Regional Director and Most Valuable Professional awardee for Developer Security.  Have I been pwned? is a free resource for anyone to quickly assess if they may have been put at risk due to an online account of theirs having been compromised or "pwned" in a data breach. Troy has managed to keep the the site dead simple to use and entirely free so that it can remain of maximum benefit to the community.

What does "pwned" mean?

The word "pwned" has origins in video game culture and is a leetspeak derivation of the word "owned", due to the proximity of the "o" and "p" keys. It's typically used to imply that someone has been controlled or compromised, for example "I was pwned in the Adobe data breach".
