The Australian Signals Directorate’s Australian Cyber Security Centre (ASD’s ACSC) is tracking and monitoring a rise in information stealer malware activity (also known as info stealers) globally.
Info stealers are a critical tool in the cybercriminal arsenal, posing a significant threat to individuals and organisations alike. In recent months, thousands of Australians have fallen victim to info stealers.
Info stealer malware secretly collects information from victims’ devices, such as user login credentials and system information.Once cybercriminals have stolen your sensitive information, they generally exploit it for monetary gain. If they don’t target you directly, they will often sell or trade your stolen information to other cybercriminals to target you further or target more victims.
With access to personal and financial accounts, they can carry out identity theft, financial fraud, and account takeovers. Theft of your corporate credentials can lead to larger scale incidents, including ransomware, data extortion and more.
Info stealers are designed to be undetectable, so you may not know your device is infected or that your data is being stolen. This highlights the importance of taking steps now to protect your devices and accounts, before you become a victim.
