This year, we encourage you to take time to talk cyber security with your family, friends and colleagues, and urge them to take action.
Cybercrime reports are increasing and malicious cyber activity continues to pose a risk to every Australian. Cyber security is everyone’s business. By taking simple steps, everyone can help make Australia the most secure place to connect online.
There are 4 simple steps you can take to improve your cyber security:
- Turn on multi-factor authentication.
- Keep your devices and software up to date.
- Use strong and unique passwords, such as a passphrase.
- Recognise and report phishing.

Steps to improve your cyber security
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is one of the best ways to protect your accounts.
- Learn how to turn on MFA.

Check that automatic updates are on and install updates as soon as possible.
- Learn how to update your devices.

Passphrases are more secure versions of passwords, using 4 or more random words. For example: ‘crystal onion clay pretzel’. Don’t compromise your accounts by re-using passwords or passphrases.

- Consider storing your passwords and passphrases in a reputable password manager.
Scammers use phishing as a way to trick you into giving them personal information, such as your login details.
